ENTRY NO. 0249 EXAMINED 2026-10-11 ONE CONFIGURATION ON FILE

STFU

phrase online dismissal
Shut the fuck up — the internet's preferred four-letter speed bump for any argument you want to end immediately.
1

Variations

  • STFUUUU
  • stfu rn
  • shut tf up
2

Origin

Emerged from 1990s IRC and early internet chatrooms where abbreviation was survival, then migrated to texting and forums as bandwidth-saving hostility. Nobody owns the coinage; it's less an invention than a convergence of impatience and keyboard shortcuts.

Examples

"He kept arguing about the ref's call so I just typed stfu and left the group chat."
"Bro please stfu, nobody asked about your crypto portfolio again."
"The comments section devolved into pure stfu-fest within four replies."

Cultural context

Ranges from genuinely hostile (flame wars, Reddit threads) to affectionately teasing among friends who know the other person is being dramatic; tone is carried entirely by context since the text itself reads as maximum aggression. Safe among close friends who speak this dialect, risky with coworkers, strangers, or anyone who might report you to HR.

STILL NOT IT?

If this is not the meaning you meant, the machine can run a fresh search and document the missing one.
